There is a moment every year when the honey bee colony begins to change.
It isn't dramatic. There is no announcement, no single day when summer ends and winter preparation begins. Instead, the change happens quietly, almost beneath our notice.
The days become a little shorter. The mornings feel cooler. Flowers that seemed endless in July begin to disappear. The fields lose some of their colour, and the abundance of summer slowly gives way to something more precious: preparation.
For the honey bees living in North America, fall is not simply the end of summer.
It is the season of getting ready to survive.
And inside the hive, there is an extraordinary amount of work taking place.
The colony begins to think differently
During the height of summer, a healthy honey bee colony can be incredibly busy. Thousands of bees may be flying from the hive each day, collecting nectar and pollen, feeding young bees, building comb, cooling the hive and performing the countless jobs required to keep the colony alive.
But as autumn approaches, the colony's priorities change.
The queen begins laying fewer eggs as the days shorten and temperatures drop. This is important because raising young bees requires enormous amounts of food and energy.
The colony can no longer afford to operate as though summer will last forever.
The bees begin preparing for a much smaller world.
And one of their most important preparations is food.
Honey becomes the colony's winter pantry
Honey is much more than something we enjoy on toast or stir into tea.
For a honey bee colony, it is stored energy.
During the warmer months, bees collect nectar from flowers. They bring it home, transform it, and carefully store it in honeycomb. Water is removed from the nectar until it becomes the thick, concentrated food we know as honey.
Then the cells are sealed with beeswax.
It is almost as though the bees are closing the doors on their pantry and saying,
This is for later.
And later matters.
When winter arrives, there may be weeks or months when flowers are unavailable. In much of Canada and the northern United States, snow can cover the landscape entirely.
The bees cannot simply go outside and find something to eat.
So the work they did during summer becomes the difference between life and death during winter.
The winter bees are different
One of the most beautiful parts of the colony's seasonal story is the arrival of what beekeepers commonly call winter bees.
These bees are produced in late summer and fall and are physiologically different from the short-lived summer workers.
Summer bees work extraordinarily hard. They may live only several weeks because of the tremendous physical demands of foraging.
Winter bees, however, are built for endurance.
They develop greater stores of internal energy reserves and are capable of living for several months. Their job is not to spend their lives flying from flower to flower.
Their job is to keep the colony alive.
They will carry the colony through the long months when there is little or no forage available.
There is something deeply moving about that.
The bees born as summer begins are not necessarily the ones who will see the next spring.
Instead, the colony continually creates the generation it needs for the season ahead.
The hive becomes a place of warmth
Honey bees don't hibernate.
This is an important distinction.
When temperatures fall, the bees gather together inside the hive and form what is called a winter cluster.
The queen is protected in the centre.
Worker bees surround her and one another, forming layers that help conserve heat.
When the outside temperature becomes extremely cold, the bees generate heat by moving their flight muscles. They consume stored honey to fuel this process.
The cluster isn't a motionless ball of sleeping insects.
It is alive.
It contracts when the weather becomes colder and can expand when conditions become warmer. The bees continually work together to maintain the conditions necessary for survival.
Even in the middle of a Canadian winter, beneath snow and silence, there can be thousands of honey bees quietly working to keep one another warm.
Beeswax has a story too
By fall, the wax comb inside the hive holds an incredible record of the colony's year.
It contains the remains of summer abundance: honey, pollen, brood and countless journeys made by thousands of bees.
Beeswax itself is produced by young worker bees. It takes a tremendous amount of energy for bees to make wax, which is one reason why beeswax is such a valuable resource within the hive.
The comb becomes the colony's pantry, nursery and living space.
By autumn, much of it is filled with the food that will sustain the colony through winter.
Nothing is accidental.
Nothing is wasted.
The colony becomes quieter
Perhaps the most noticeable change for a beekeeper is simply the quiet.
There are fewer bees flying.
The constant summer traffic at the entrance slows.
There are fewer flowers to visit, fewer reasons to leave, and increasingly, fewer opportunities to forage.
But quiet doesn't mean nothing is happening.
Inside, the colony is making decisions.
The bees are conserving energy.
They are protecting their food.
They are raising the bees that will become the winter population.
They are preparing the queen.
They are maintaining the hive.
They are, in their own remarkable way, preparing for uncertainty.
Fall teaches us something about abundance
There is something especially meaningful about watching honey bees prepare for winter.
All summer long, the landscape seems to give freely.
Flowers bloom. Bees fly. Nectar flows.
But the bees never seem to assume that abundance will last forever.
They gather while they can.
They store what they need.
They work together.
And when the season changes, they adapt.
Perhaps that is one of the reasons honey bees have captured our imagination for thousands of years. Their lives remind us that survival is rarely about one individual doing everything.
It is about the colony.
A single honey bee cannot survive a Canadian winter alone.
But thousands of bees working together can create warmth, preserve food, care for their queen and protect the next generation.
And then comes spring
The remarkable thing about winter preparation is that it is really preparation for spring.
The bees aren't simply trying to endure the cold.
They are trying to make it through to another year.
Eventually, the days lengthen.
Snow begins to retreat.
A few brave flowers appear.
The first bees venture outside.
And the cycle begins again.
The colony that spent autumn carefully storing honey, raising winter bees and gathering itself against the cold suddenly has a new world to explore.
There will be flowers again.
There will be nectar again.
There will be young bees again.
There will be wax and honey and pollen.
And there will be another summer.
So the next time you see a honey bee on an autumn flower, take a moment before she disappears.
She may be doing more than simply visiting a flower.
She may be gathering one last mouthful of nectar.
She may be contributing to the food that will carry her colony through the winter.
She may be part of a generation whose work will never be seen by us, but whose efforts make spring possible.
Because for honey bees, autumn isn't really about saying goodbye to summer.
It is about quietly preparing for the possibility of another spring.
